Kitchen work is indoor work, so an Illinois, Wisconsin, or Indiana winter does not stop it — but the remodeling calendar still has a strong shape. Demand, lead times, and even permit turnaround swing through the year. We live this calendar from the fabrication side, so here is the honest tour of it, month by month, including when our own quotes come back fastest.

January through March: the value window

Demand drops hard after the holidays, once the wave of finish-it-before-Thanksgiving projects has washed through. In these months shops like ours quote fastest, popular materials are back in stock after fall back-orders, crews have consecutive open days, and some contractors discount labor to keep employees busy. Municipal permit desks also move faster with less volume. Remodelers across the region make the same point: interior projects run normally through a Midwest winter, and modern materials and logistics handle the cold. The one calendar hazard is behind you — the holiday weeks themselves, when crew schedules fragment. A January start typically runs smoother than a December one.

Winter completion has a quiet second benefit: the kitchen is done before spring and summer entertaining, exactly when everyone else is just getting in line.

April through August: peak season

Spring and summer are the busiest install seasons across the industry. A shop that turns a countertop in under two weeks in January can stretch to three or four-plus weeks at peak — ours included; physics does not care how hustley we are — and the best crews book out months ahead. None of this makes summer a bad time to remodel — it is often the most convenient season for grilling through a kitchen-less stretch — but it does mean booking early. Want a June install? Get quotes and a template date on the calendar in March or April.

September: the fork in the road

Early fall is the moment to be honest about holiday goals, because the two project types diverge sharply.

A full cabinet replacement for Christmas is a June decision. Remodelers who publish holiday timelines put the comfortable start at mid-June: design through July, cabinet order in by early August (manufacturing runs four to twelve weeks depending on the line), demolition and cabinet install in September, countertop template immediately after, tops and splash in by mid-October. An August start is tight but possible. By September, a Christmas completion is generally no longer realistic — the cabinet lead time plus the countertop fabrication gap simply do not fit, and no amount of optimism re-sequences it.

A countertop-only swap is a different story. At two to six weeks door to door, it can start as late as early October and still make Thanksgiving — with one caveat, below.

October and November: the crunch

The stone industry peak is the run-up to the holidays, when shops absorb a wave of last-minute orders from homeowners who want new counters under the turkey; equipment suppliers literally coach fabricators to staff up and stock spare parts for this rush. We watch our own schedule fill weeks out, and popular materials go to back-order as national demand converges. The practical rule for a Thanksgiving countertop: template by late October. By mid-November, assume you are on the after-Christmas list — which, given the January value window, is honestly not a bad list to be on. We say that as the people who would love to sell you a November install.

The honest summary

Cheapest, fastest, calmest: start in January or February.
Peak convenience but peak demand: book spring installs four to eight weeks ahead.
Kitchen by Christmas: design in June, cabinets ordered by early August.
Counters by Thanksgiving: template by late October.
Any season: the weather outside is irrelevant to the work; it is the calendar of everyone else that matters.
