Before you call — quick answers
Can I get new countertops without touching my cabinets, or will the swap wreck them?
Countertop-only replacement is one of the most routine jobs in remodeling, and sound cabinets survive it fine. The installer pries off the old tops, checks that the boxes are level and solid, shims where needed, and sets the new surface. The honest caveats: cabinets with swollen particleboard around the sink from years of small leaks may need repair first, old tile-over-mortar tops can be violent to remove, and you should expect some paint touch-up along the wall line where the old backsplash sat. A good fabricator flags all of this at the template visit, not on install day.
Can I keep my existing countertops when the cabinets are replaced?
Plan on no. Old tops - especially stone - rarely survive tear-out in reusable condition, and new boxes almost never match the old footprint exactly, so even a surviving top will not fit. Budget countertops with the cabinets and sequence the project cabinets first, then template, then tops; expect 1-3 weeks on temporary plywood tops while the new counters are fabricated.
Can I replace my cabinet hardware without drilling new holes?
Yes, if you match the existing center-to-center spacing exactly — measure between the centers of the two screw holes before you shop. Watch the metric trap: 3 in. (76 mm) and 96 mm spacings look nearly identical but are not interchangeable, and 128 mm (5-1/16 in.) is the most common modern standard. Knob swaps are always safe since one hole is one hole. If you do change spacing, the old holes must be filled, sanded, and touched up — easy on cabinets you are about to paint, conspicuous on factory-finished ones.
Can cabinets be painted during a Midwest winter or a humid August?
Yes - interior work happens year-round in Illinois, Wisconsin, and Indiana - but the calendar changes the timeline. Waterborne enamels want roughly 77 degrees and 50 percent humidity; in a chilly kitchen or a muggy July week, recoat times stretch from 16 hours to 24-36 hours, which can add days to the schedule. Good crews run dehumidifiers and fans and keep the house at normal room temperature, and shops that spray doors off-site sidestep the problem for the doors entirely. The real red flag is a painter promising the same three-day schedule in every season - drying chemistry does not negotiate.
