Can I retrofit my existing cabinets for aging in place instead of replacing them?
Often, yes. Roll-out trays and slide-out shelves install into most existing base cabinets, knobs swap to 3-inch-plus pulls in an afternoon, a lever faucet replaces a twist handle, and plug-in under-cabinet lights need no electrician. Full replacement earns its cost when the boxes themselves are failing, when the layout blocks the clearances you need (a too-narrow aisle cannot be retrofitted), or when you want structural features like a lowered seated section with knee space and drawer banks throughout.
Can I reuse my existing sink when I replace the countertops?
Sometimes, but the trades treat it as a gamble: an existing undermount is bonded to the old slab and can be damaged during demolition, and the new cutout must then match a sink that may be discolored, scratched, or slightly out of square. Drop-ins survive reuse much better. Since new fabrication is the cheapest moment to set a sink and decent stainless bowls start around $100-$300, most homeowners come out ahead putting a new sink under new stone - reuse mainly makes sense for a recently purchased or premium sink in verified good condition.
Can I save money by tearing out the old countertops myself?
Usually less than you would hope, and the risk lands on you. Tear-out is typically a small line item on a countertop quote because crews do it fast and haul the debris away. DIY removal risks cracking the tile backsplash you planned to keep, gouging cabinet frames, and wrestling a cast-iron sink or heavy stone sections that do not go out with curbside trash. If you do it anyway, confirm the fabricator will still take responsibility for cabinet condition at template, and figure out stone disposal before demo day — a ten-foot run of granite is a genuinely awkward thing to own.
Can I use my kitchen while the cabinets are being painted?
Partially. Active work typically runs 3-7 business days, during which the cabinet zone is tented in plastic with masking over counters and appliances; the refrigerator is usually reachable but the range often is not, and doors and drawer fronts are away on spray racks or at the shop. Plan simple meals, clear your countertops before day one, and expect modest odor with modern waterborne systems.
