About Elegant White

Real marble: soft, porous, and it will etch. People who love it love it anyway, and we would rather you know that up front than discover it with a lemon. The color is filed as white.

The numbers: 4/5 on heat, 1/5 on acid and citrus. In a working kitchen that means it handles heat and will not forgive acid and citrus. Bright whites broadcast crumbs and coffee rings between wipe-downs — worth knowing before you fall for one under showroom light. This one asks for real maintenance. If nobody in the house will do it, say so now and we will point you somewhere else.

Our crew templates it, cuts it here in Streamwood and sets it. One company for the measurement, the cut and the install — so there is nobody to blame but us. Installed, this material benchmarks around $105/sq ft in the Chicago suburbs — the table below shows the full range and where it came from.

How it lives — durability & care

Independent ratings and the real maintenance routine for marble.

FactorRatingWhat that means day to day
Etch/acid1/5Acids (lemon, tomato, vinegar, wine, some cleaners) dull the polish on contact — sealing cannot prevent etching.
Heat4/5The stone itself tolerates heat well (pastry boards are marble), but hot pans can damage the finish over etched or sealed areas.
Impact/chipping3/5Softer stone; edges and corners chip more readily than granite.
Moisture3/5Porous; needs maintained sealing in wet zones to avoid water shadows.
Scratch2/5Only 3-4 Mohs; knives, pots, and even ceramic mugs scratch polished marble.
Stain2/5Porous; wine, coffee, and oil stain quickly once the sealer lapses. Reseal every 6-12 months.
Sunlight (UV)4/5Generally stable indoors; prolonged direct sun can lighten some colored marbles.
Everyday wear2/5Polished marble dulls and collects etch marks in work zones within months of real cooking. It can be professionally refinished every few years, and many owners embrace the patina.

Care routine

  • Blot acidic spills immediately — Daily · Lemon juice, tomato, wine, coffee, vinegar, and fizzy drinks start dissolving marble on contact — this is etching, a chemical burn, not a stain. Blot (do not wipe) the instant you see a spill, rinse with water, and dry. Keep cutting boards and coasters in the splash zone. · Avoid: Letting anything acidic sit "until after dinner" — etching happens in minutes · If you skip it: high — etch marks are permanent finish damage; sealing does NOT prevent them
  • Daily cleaning — Daily · Use only pH-neutral cleaners: stone soap, a neutral stone spray, or a small amount of mild dish soap in warm water. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Anything acidic — including many "natural" vinegar or citrus cleaners — etches the surface. · Avoid: Vinegar, lemon, ammonia, bleach, bathroom/grout cleaners, scouring powders and creams · If you skip it: medium-high — one pass with a vinegar cleaner can dull an entire polished counter
  • Etch-mark repair — As-needed · Light etch marks and glass rings on POLISHED marble: buff with marble polishing powder and a damp cloth in circular motions until the gloss returns; repeat as needed. On HONED marble, light etching often blends in with soapy water and a buff. Deep or widespread etching needs a stone-restoration pro with diamond abrasives — do not attempt to sand it yourself; you will create flat shiny or burned spots. · Avoid: DIY sanding or angle-grinder polishing kits on a visible counter · If you skip it: cosmetic but cumulative — a counter full of etch rings eventually needs full professional re-honing
  • Sealing — Every 3-6 months · Marble is more porous than granite: run the water-drop test every few months and reseal when water stops beading — typically every 3-6 months on a kitchen counter. Understand what you are buying: an impregnating sealer slows STAINS (oil, wine soaking in) but does nothing against ETCHING, which is a surface chemical reaction. · Avoid: Believing sealer makes marble worry-proof; topical waxes that alter the finish · If you skip it: medium-high — unsealed marble drinks oil and wine; stains on top of etching is the fast lane to a professional restoration bill

Questions about Elegant White

Answered from this product’s own spec sheet and our measurement of it.

Does Elegant White need sealing?

Yes. Marble is porous. It wants sealing on installation and re-sealing periodically, and it will etch where an acid sits on it — lemon, wine, some cleaners. Beautiful, and a real commitment.

What color is Elegant White?

Elegant White is filed with our white countertops, because its catalog name places it there. We have not measured a swatch of this one, so judge the shade on the slab itself, in daylight, before it is cut.

How does Elegant White hold up in a kitchen?

As marble, Elegant White rates 4/5 for heat, 2/5 for stain, 2/5 for scratch and 1/5 for etch/acid on the independent material scale in the durability table on this page, where 5 is best. The low etch number is the one to plan around: an acid left sitting on Elegant White dulls the polish.

What does Elegant White cost installed?

Elegant White is priced on our marble tier: installed, from $5,100–$9,000 for a galley kitchen (30–45 sq ft) up to $15,300–$24,000 for an extra large kitchen (90–120 sq ft). The quote for your kitchen comes from your own measurements.

What do you not list for Elegant White?

A spec sheet. For Elegant White we hold the name and the stone type, not its finish, thickness or quarry, so this page does not state them. They are confirmed on the actual slab before anything is cut.
